Having DJed at a number of weddings recently I've become rather fond of the dusty jams that keep the dance floor packed n sweaty for hours. Amongst old mo-town hits, Darryl Braithwaite keeps me perplexed and the words of Toto's Africa always escape me, and everyone else. But hey. They make for a great time. So I'm gonna attempt a number of remakes (under a new moniker) of songs of such caliber. they're not designed for weddings (!) but for whenever you feel fit. Here's attempt number one:

I highly doubt New Navy need an introduction. The tropical version of Foals have been dominating airwaves since their release of 'Zimbabwe' last year. Label pal, Flume, did a rather stellar, mellow remix (see the clip below), Lancelot gave it a go too. But perhaps the most dancefloor worthy comes from Sydney indie-dance three-piece Rufus. Tomorrow is a happy / sad day. It is another date of the Hall & Oates tour of Australia at The Plenary in Melbourne. There are 5 more shows to follow that one in the eastern states. Thats why it's a happy day. It's a sad day (every day this tour drags on) as they're not popping in to little ole Perth. Such a shame.

The next single off The Rapture's new album is out. It's called ~~Sail Away~~ and comes with a killer remix package. The Cut Copy remix takes the cake for me and is probably the only dance floor worthy mix with those arpeggiators going bananas. The re hashes from Aeroplane and Cosmic Kids are still rippers in their own right. What a combo - great choice from DFA, as always. Diverse.

Shut Up And Play The Hits is the new documentary from LCD Soundsystem that brings to light all the thrills, spills, joy and sadness of the end of era for one of music's modern greats. The film follows the band before, during and after their final show from April 2 last year in Maddison Square Gardens, New York City - an extravaganza that lasted 4 hours and featured not just LCD Soundsystem but also many friends and their extended "family". Official screenings are yet to be announced for Australia but the film will be screened at the Sundance Film Festival this year. Looking forward to this one!

This is something special - I stumbled across this on Mover Shaker's tumblr site which, incidently, has some pretty cool shit on it. I've always said if I could have one super power it would be the ability to fly. This guy has almost got it. Watch the video and be amazed. I also really liked the song backing the clip too. Jonathan Moore aka Leftside Wobble is a favourite of mine. Not only does he clog my "incoming tracks" feed on Soundcloud with warped out edits and remixes but at the moment he's also clogging my Christmas stocking. This year he's releasing "12 Edits of Christmas". Pretty simple really - an edit a day keeps the festive season pains away.

JM doesn't seem to want to be pigeon-holed into a specific genre, and that's quite clear given the varied styles of Leftside Wobble Tracks. The Backyard Project

Hola. Tomorrow afternoon I'll be popping into the Back Yard studio for a two hour set from 2pm til 4pm. The Back Yard Project launched last monday, the 12th, and is something I'm stoked to be a part of. There is a wide range of of Perths best DJs playing everything from jungle, to house and disco, to trip hop, breaks, down tempo, hip hop and everything in between for 12 hours every day, midday to midnight. So if you're in the office or pottering around at home tune in.

As this is an online radio station it gives me the freedom to play whatever I want, with out having to worry about a dancelfoor or nasty stares so expect to hear some different stuff. And some favourites. New and Old.

Here's some tropical volcanic funk for your Thursday. Soul Picon are a six piece disco/soul/funk band from Tenerife in the Canary Islands. This means they naturally speaka de Espanol and they also sing in Spanish. This does not, however, mean you can't enjoy their music. It's infectious. Although I can't understand all the vocals they sound pretty sleezey and they're backed by tight drums, funky guitar riffs, walking bass lines and jaming keys. They're really nice guys too - especially Jorgito.

Recently I've been hammering the remix package of Flight Facilities' "Foreign Language". I really can't decide which one is my favourite - there's one for every mood. Rocco Raimundo and Drop Out Orchestra don't fail to impress but the one that sort of caught me off guard was from Will Saul and Tam Cooper. Will - the founder of Aus Music and Simple Records - is someone I know very little about but would love to know more. With the aid of Tam he pulls Foreign Language into the depths with this dubbed out remix.

On further investigation of Mr Saul I came across his exclusive mixtape for XOYO and within it a very shiny gem. Maybe a closer for his heavier sets, inducing one of those hands in the air moments. Who knows. All I know is this is so far up my alley it hurts.

Clubfeet are an interesting posse. Their a five piece from Melbourne, and from Cape Town in South Africa, who have been leaking out a few releases in the past year. They claim to like "Monaco ice-creams, News Gothic 11 Font, Oliver Peoples specs, and oversized Helmut Newton art-books" and they also make great indie/electro tunes. Signed to Illusive and Plant Music in North America, the boys are currently revealing "chapters" of their latest project with filmographer/director, Alex Goddard, online. Who is LNTG?

LNTG is the much shorter acronym for the veteran DJ and producer from Adelaide, Late Nite Tuff Guy, otherwise known as Carmelo Bianchetti. He's accepted to be one of the key players in introducing the sounds of Detroit and Chicago house music to the underground Australian scene back in the 80s. As a close friend of DJ Agent 86, the latest LNTG releases have come out on the Agent's Melbourne Based label - and one of my homegrown favourites - Lightspeed Recordings. Kindly, LNTG shares most of his works on his Soundcloud page but, even more generously, Lightspeed Recordings have sent me through a link for his latest release - "Tuff Edits Vol 3" - with a free download of one of the tracks. The promo email explains things pretty well: "No one does it quite like Late Nite Tuff Guy does it. Fat edits with heavy kicks, heavy hearts & heavy soul." Too right. Back 2 Basics

The past few posts have been pretty thin on the music front so I'm just warning you... this is gonna be good. Let's begin.

Elijah Collins, aka Jnr J, is a fellow from London who released a momentous tune back in July that some how slipped straight through to the keeper. Gladly I've now found it, bought it and can't turn it off. You just wait until the vocals pop in half way through. I can't find a cloud link for the winning track 'Love's Down' for your listening pleasure but I do have the Shake n Bake edit. Just as good, if not better! Another track, 'The Reason', is available for free and is complete with melancholic vocals, a dicey deep house beat and some pretty industrial sounding synths.

I think the majority of the dance music community, world wide, are aware of the thriving, underground dance scene in Glasgow. It was home to the wondrous Optimo/Espacio club night at the Sub Club (which is one club night I really wish I'd gone to in my lifetime) and now I know it's home to a duo who are churning out some sleazy, thick edits. These guys keep it real and keep em slow, rolling and chugging. There are a number of top notch FREE downloads on their Soundcloud page so I simply can't decide which ones to slap up here - make sure you have listen to them all! The second one isn't free but it is an awesome track that should probably be listened to quite loudly.

Matt is an old friend of mine who takes great photos. He's toured the US with Tame Impala as their photographer, hanging in the van with MGMT, and has worked with other Perth bands The Silents and Pond. His debut solo exhibition begins this Thursday and runs until October 23 at the Perth Centre for Photography (91 Brisbane Street, Northbridge). He's also a wicked drummer with a couple of musical projects - Apricot Rail and Perth. Furthermore, has a really cool baby boy and curly hair. Plenty of reasons to check him out.

Filling in the Blanks: A MIXTAPE SPECIAL

Hey you know what? I love music. And I love sharing it around too. I think my favourite way to find new music, or a great old tune for that matter, is to listen to mix tapes. There's certainly no shortage of them and with modern technology and the not so recent advent of the internet, teeny tiny computers and programs like Ableton any punter, DJ or music aficionado can churn out a mixtape whenever and where ever they please (Aeroplane did one of his monthly ones in a fucken airport lounge). Record labels get artists to create mix CDs for mass distribution, as do music magazines and clubs e.g. the Fabric series. Sounds simple. But it's not that easy. Choice is the key.

As there are so many tapes out there now, on Soundcloud and Mixcloud and everything else, I've tried not to choose one of the monthly tapes as a favourite - I wouldn't know where to begin. Instead I'll guide in the direction of some goodies: Greg Wilson, Aeroplane, The Magician, Future Classic, The C90s and Mighty Mouse should get you started.

I'm sure you've heard me harp on about Tim Sweeney's BEATS IN SPACE before. Good music and good chats. The most recent mixes from Dixon and Slow Hands are top notch too. More recently the Red Bull Music Academy has been putting up some good shit - namely the fireside chat with Nico Jaar.

Now for the nitty//gritty//notsoshitty part. No doubt you've heard of the DJ Kicks series where, basically, the artist creates a set they would love to play at a house party with friends. Two of my favourites from this series are from Erlend Oye and Soul Clap / Wolf + Lamb, with honourable mentions to Booka Shade and Chromeo. Oi oi oi... here are some tracks I've finished recently. They are all kinda works in progress still. Somethings just never feel finished. Except maybe the last one. I think that's done. The first was partly recorded at home, bits added in Barcelona and vocals edited in Greenland. The second is a remix for a friend, Fastest Man Alive, and was completed over a series of train rides around Europe. The third was done in Amsterdam with the aid of space cake or two.

A Tragic End For A French Legend

I've been a bit quiet over the past couple of weeks but I think there is no better time to deliver some news than now. One of the brightest members of France's Ed Banger Records team has tragically died at the age of 34. DJ Mehdi, aka Mehdi Favéris-Essadi, reportedly lost his life after falling from the collapsing roof of his house in Paris. According to DJ Mag, Mehdi was hosting a birthday party for close friend and partner in Carte Blanche, Riton, aka Henry Smithson. While gathered on the roof of Mehdi's house it collapsed and, apparently, everyone fell except Riton. While others have been injured, ironically, and more so tragically, the host of the party was the only one to perish.

Mehdi's popularity cannot be denied - having toured the world multiple times to sold out shows he's also played along side and worked closely with the likes of A Trak, Daft Punk and Justice, to name a few. Twitter and Facebook have gone bananas with RIP messages from The Magician, Aeroplane, Chromeo, Midnight Savari, Classixx and Azari & III, just about every music page and blog as well as masses of individuals. Not only does he leave the hip hop and dance/electronic music communities in shock but he leaves behind a wife and a young son. We send our love to his family and friends in France and all over the world.

Thanks for everything Mehdi, I hope a big shiny disco awaits in the clouds.

While he's probably best known for his ear bleeding, dirty electro sets at clubs and festivals around the world, I personally prefer Erol Alkan's sublime "reworks". In the past, he's laid down his production skills on the drawing board for Badly Drawn Boy, Midlake and Findlay Brown, under the guise of Beyond The Wizard's sleeve. These are the mellowest of his works, dreamy and spacious. Then there is the string of slightly more upbeat Erol Alkan reworks for the likes of Death From Above 1979, Bloc Party, Interpol and Hot Chip (that's just a few). More recently he's released three gems for Tame Impala, Connan Mockasin and, my favourite, Metronomy...

The great man, Greg Wilson, is a Warm Kitten favourite. He's the official master of the edit, the comeback, the reel-to-reel and all things in between. You should probably know that plenty of his best edits/remixes are being posted up on his Soundcloud at the moment and are available for FREE DOWNLOAD. I highly recommend a sticky beak - I actually think Greg Wilson's Soundcloud page is one of my favourite websites.

In the meantime, check out this number - his mash of Missy Elliot's "Work It" and Imagination's "Just an Illusion". The track has been posted up here before but only as a cut from Greg's impeccable Essential Mix, where it was listed under the guise of 'Young Dog Alien' - so a big thanks to Black Swan for the heads up on this one. "In March 2004 I appeared at the Time Machine night in Nottingham, which was held at The Social. I was still very much finding my feet, having only started up again a few months beforehand, and this was one of my first handful of bookings following my comeback. It was a night run by Soul Mekanik (Kelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer), who, together with Daniel Donnachie, were the resident DJ’s.

Daniel put me up that night, and we sat up into the early hours listening to records, a few of which he was kind enough to record to CD for me. One of these was the instrumental of a PM Dawn track called ‘Gotta Be…Movin’ On Up’, which was built around the unmistakeable killer groove of ‘Just An Illusion’ by Imagination.

I can’t recall if it was a few weeks, or a few months later, but I remember driving to collect my son from Primary School listening to the CD that Daniel had done for me – I can see exactly where I was, approaching the traffic lights, about to turn right onto Queens Drive in Liverpool, where the school was, when in my minds ear I could hear Missy Elliot’s ‘Work It’ rap fitting hand in glove on top of that groove.

When I got back home I tried it out and, just as I’d envisaged, it was a perfect marriage, so I began to glue it all together. I utilized Jay-Z’s ‘Reasonable Doubt’ during the intro and the break, whilst slipping in Missy Elliot’s rap section from Tweet’s ‘Oops (Oh My)’ between the parts I’d used from ‘Work It’. A sprinkle of Sinnamon, and some suitably sensual sighs and moans further peppered up proceedings, whilst Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’ puts in a brief cameo via the line ‘oh baby now let’s get down tonight’ and a few ‘ooohs’.

The resulting mash-up became something of a signature track for me, especially big with the girls, and was twice pressed on ‘DJ only’ 12” - in 2006, then again in 2008. I still get asked for it now, and played it most recently over in Croatia at the Garden Festival.

I originally listed the artist name as Dawn Elliot & Co, and it was later pressed on limited vinyl as Young Dog Alien (this is how it appears in the tracklisting of my Radio 1 Essential Mix from 2009), however, here I’ve settled on its most recognisable elements, Imagination & Missy Elliot.

I later put together a further version that features the vocal of ‘Just An Illusion’ before Missy’s rap kicks in. It was available here for a period last year – I’ll re-upload at some point."

There's a young guy in New York, just 18 years of age, who is making some really cool nu disco/house stuff, influenced by "palm trees, smooth disco, champagne and late nights". He goes by the name of Cream Dream and if he doesn't give you one then I dunno what will. It's heavily cut n sampled, with a French twist from the prime of the Braxe/Falke era and is bound to get even the stiffest dude bopping around the office. Pretty infectious. He's got a free EP out, entitled Paradiso, and a few other cracking tracks on Soundcloud, including a pulsating remix of Breakbot's summer smash "Fantasy". Today was a good day. Mitzi's release of the single "Morning Light" dropped on Future Classic and falling with it was a bundle of remixes, all shining and glittering in their own way. The Revenge remix was solid, Graeme's work being as tight as nun's nasty, complete with his trademarked thick bass and house keys. The boys from Scenic put in a mighty effort, amidst working on their own new single and galavanting around Europe, creating a cosmic rework with their own, perhaps, soon to be trademarked Scenic tropo-disco twist. The sun is shining bright for some of Perth's finest. But for me, the highlight came from the Sydney-siders, Softwar. Ooo east vs west! Underground disco heroes on the east coast with a brooding international rep, Jeremy and Myles are very talented fellows. Plenty of the original vocals, a stomping synthetic bass line and rolling arpeggios all blended with some filtered keys that sneak up on you around halfway through. And for some crazy reason it's free! The dub version is fkn dope too. Buy it.

Well well well. What have we here? Yet another Future Classic gem. The Jeremy Glenn "New Life" EP that came out about a month ago is nothing short of brilliant. Pop vocals, house beats, stabbing keys and well paced for a good groove. Jeremy hails from Toronto and I admit I know little more about him. But I'll be following very closely. This is a slightly muddled post. It's just a bunch of songs I'm loving at the moment, kind of related but not entirely, like every post I suppose. As I'm still catching up on musical happenings I only just got a hold of the entire Foster the People album, "Torches". After the sublime 'Pumped Up Kicks' single was released I was worried they'd be a one hit wonder but oh no! It's a great album with plenty of excellent remix potential. Switch Onn favourites, RAC, put a great cosmic/indie twist on 'Houdini' with rolling arpeggiators reminiscent of Lifelike and Kris Menace. There's a great vocal breakdown toward the end too. The Gigamesh remix of 'Foster The People' adds some bouncing house keys and enough space toms for a late night dance floor.

Friday is: the launch of Perth's very own boogie/disco/funk five-piece Bastian's Happy Flight. They've already supported the likes of Canyons, G.L.O.V.E.S., thee Bang Gang Dee-jays and Scenic, among others, but this time they're storming the stage solo for the release of "EP 01". Given the numbering of the EP I sure hope there are more to come.

The band is full of talent, including two WAMi (West Australian Music Industry) awards, and with much club experience already - in DJ mode - they sure know how to party and how to put on a good show. On Friday night head on down to King Tito's Dirty Disco at the East End Bar in Fremantle for the EP launch. Doors open at 9pm and entry costs a baby-sized fee of $12 so empty those pockets. EPs will be available for sale on the night and in the meantime you can stream some tracks off the cloud below. As per usual the King Tito's DJ's will be out in force showing much support so get involved!

Today's music comes form three Los Angeles duos that are favourites here at Warm Kitten. I've been meaning to post these first two tracks for sometime so you may well be all over them already. But if you're not you will be soon. I'm only giving the Soundcloud links for these because they should be bought - just follow Soundcloud's directions, it's easy. Poolside (like dat shit) make music straight from their 'poolside' studio with 'poolside' life and behaviour being a large influence on their sound - their tunes are full of very summery, wet and cosmic sounds. The release came out on Future Classic (of course!) earlier in the year with a number of remixes in the package but for me the Cosmic Kids mix is the winner.

Jamie XX is truly the young champion of the UK's, if not the world's, "post dubstep" scene and thank fuck for that because I don't like dubstep very much so I'm glad people now refer to a "post" sorta scene. Jamie's talents are undisputed. Here he combines with Gill Scott-Heron, the jazz lovin', spoken word maestro, to recreate 'I'll Take Care Of You', the closing track on Scott-Heron's album, 'I'm New Here'. The XX producer has actually "remixed" the entire album, the release being entitled 'We're New Here', and it's totally worth a listen. It makes Gill's music more accessible for more people which is a great thing. He's an artist every one should be aware of and Jamie makes this more possible - one of the key benefits of remixing I suppose. This track definitely takes the cake though. A heartfelt gem.

Let's thicken up that bass. I reckon Switzerland's Round Table Knights are pretty awesome. Their album 'Say What?!' (check out the Perthquake interview) came out a few months ago and I can honestly say I like it all. Quite a lot. Even the interludes are good! The tech house beats at a bearable tempo with grooving stabs and some pretty housey vocal samples make for a bit of a dance floor destroying album. 'All Night' has a really cool 80s twist to it while 'Why Be Serious' has hints of Fatboy Slim mixed with more indie/nu disco synth sounds of today. The closing track 'Drop The Dow' is an absolute thumper as well so check that out too.

It's all about peaks and troughs so lets bring it down a bit for the final track. Washed Out, aka Ernest Greene, adds a bit more punch to the dreamwave/beach pop/chillwave genre. I've been in Milan for the past couple of weeks fiddling around with kiddies, skating and aimlessly wandering the streets but mainly I've been playing on my Mac since being reunited with it. Happy Days. Some of the results can be found below. First up is my latest product. I got the stems months ago before I went traveling but have not had the time, or the facilities, to have a tinker. Slowed down and slightly mellowed out form the progressive house thumper it once was.

The next two songs are a lot less complicated and I think I prefer them. If you didn't already know Cheb Khaled is an Algerian dude, most famous for his music from the late 80s and early 90s, and is probably the most well known Arabic pop star. He's a slightly unorthodox Arab, giving his musical adventures, and as a result has an Islamic fatwa issued upon him for his death. He's kind of like the Bob Marley of Algeria. In a roundabout sorta way. I saw him and his band live about a week ago and, not knowing a single track before I went, I loved the show.

A little bit of a Monstrous Monday for you. We all know Underworld's anthemic 'Born Slippy' but if you're not a hardcore dance fan like myself you probably tend not to know what to do with yourself when the main beat drops... Si? Cisco Cisco have solved the problem. The duo from Lisbon in Portugal, signed to Apersonal Records, twisted the summery, spacey intro of Born Slippy into an entire track, giving it all the extra elements it needs to be a late night/early morn dance floor chuggin' love maker. Apersonal actually put this one out as a freebie so enjoy it and watch out for future Apersonal releases of Cisco Cisco's bangin' newy 'Brothers In Arms'.

Future Classic are continuing to be, in my opinion, the premier electronic/dance label from Australia at the moment with endless, wonderful releases including those from Bon Chat, Bon Rat, Mario & Vidis, Poolside and upcoming works from Perth's Scenic. The track below comes from Brisbane 4 piece, Mitzi, from the EP 'All I Heard'. I spose if i described their sound quickly I would say it's like Holy Ghost! with a bit more happening. I love it. Of the three tracks this is my fav. Incidentally, one member of Mitzi is Sunshine Coast producer, Jad Lee, who's featured here before...

Luke "Youth" Foskey aka Young Edits is a master of the revamp. This is probably my favourite of his works but he does great things to Talking Heads, Global Communication and Chris Rea to name a few.

Man these guys are the coolest kids on the underground "disco" block right now. Producers and DJs, as well as label honchos, the Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap posse of 4 is one to be admired. Their "vs" DJ Kicks came out recently and its certainly something different, special and worth listening to, spanning many genres, appealing to many tastes and many times. I could tell you loads about them or I could just redirect you to Beats In Space where they took over for a couple of hours last week and they chat a fair bit about their recent doings (their live sets sound epic) and play a bundle of upcoming releases on W + L. I'm a little more familiar with Soul Clap and here's a little from their bio:

"Elyte and Cnyce's paths were crossed for all time when a Sun Ra light beam sent from Saturn collided with the P-Funk Mothership and sent them tumbling to earth. Now, Soul Clap time travels on a musical spaceship of dopeness..."

A label I'm loving at the moment is Under The Shade. The track Truth & Temptation by Burnt Island Casuals (a guise for Harri + The Revenge) samples the bangin' Temptations tune from the above clip and burns along for about 10 minutes. Reminiscent of House of House without a thumping piano solo. Feel the Russians push the buttons.

Next up is another newish artist to keep your eyes on: Hotel Motel. Not only a cool name, they make cool music. Hotel Motel is Bill Brewster (of DJ History fame) and Alex Tepper and this single, Eye No, came out on the label Home Taping Is Killing Music. O the irony. Filtered piano samples, deep house kicks, slow grooves. Love it. Burnt Island Casuals also do a remix of this.

Well the Holy Ghost! debut album is finally out and to be honest I wasn't totally impressed. All the best tracks had been released already. But this remix by CFCF puts an Ibiza spin on things, perfect for northern dancefloors.

Scratchandsniff is a producer out of Glasgow who i have found on 'the cloud' so keeping in the soundcloud theme I thought I'd run a quick post.

These edits are the product of soul lover/beard/aficionado - choose your term but in essence they have only had enough done to them to make them a little more DJ friendly - longer intros, beefed choruses etc. Keeping the song as true to the original as possible whilst making it possible to feed into a more modern set.

I'm a big fan so many of these songs seem to be built for the dfloor but for some, a lunatic start or a non existent end.

I love it. The Cloud. If you don't have an account then you should get one. It's totally worth it and totally free. You don't need to be in a band, a DJ or producer or anything fancy. By following others and viewing their comments and favourited tracks you can find some absolute gems. On my dashboard it came up with a notification that Ibiza veteran, Jon Sa Trinxa, had commented on a track saying he would be "playing this all summer". Not only is it a great song, it's free for download. Some freebies come in WAV format but iTunes converts that shit if you want anyway. Get involved.

As the irrepressible man of Moments is on holiday in one of the other southern continents I, Odim have been asked to finally fulfil my promise to post occasionally on this blog that George does an such excellent job of.

My 'new' rental is lacking in such dang fangled new age technological advances as a phone line despite being habited for some 100 years, possibly by the same person.

Cut Copy's new album Zonoscope is due out soon and in anticipation Modular have released, for FREE, an absolutely amazing remix of 'Take Me Over' by DFA henchman Tim Goldsworthy aka Thee Loving Hand. It's got all Tim's usual sounds - chugging, super deep bass and pulsing synths with a vocal reworking combo'ed with a strangely progressive sounding breakdown that's later followed by another interlude that stabs and floats at massive heights before the bass comes back. Then comes the percussion... sounds like this song goes forever eh... well it is ten and a half minutes spanning about five genres of "dance" music. Very, very good.
